题目:Manipulating Classical Waves Using Topological Properties

摘要:

 The study on manipulating classical waves can date back to thousands of years ago, while the modern evolution in this classical field was propelled by the invention of photonic and phononic crystals around three decades ago. More recently, people started to classify the band structures of these man-made crystals in terms of band topology, which then led to the newly emerging field of topological photonics and phononics. This talk comprises two major parts. In the first part, I will talk about the correspondence between Zak phases and the surface impedance in one-dimensional photonic/phononic crystals with inversion symmetry. The extension of this correspondence to two-dimensional systems is also briefly discussed. In the second part, I will talk about our theoretical and experimental realizations of topological semimetals with phononic and photonic crystals, in both microwave region and optical region. I will also discuss our recent progress in topological physics in synthetic dimensions.

 

简历:

 Meng XIAO is now a professor in Wuhan University. Before that, he was a postdoc working with Prof. Shanhui Fan in the electrical engineering department of Stanford University. He got his Ph.D. from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2014, Supervisor: Prof. C. T. Chan) and bachelor’s degree from Wuhan University (2010). Dr. Xiao has worked on topics such as Zak phases and topological transition in one-dimensional systems, topological semimetal and their realization in classical waves, topological physics in synthetic dimensions. Dr. Xiao has published around 60 SCI papers and cited by over 2500 times (H-index: 26). For a full list of publication, please refer to Google Scholar.
