题目:Folded graphene: from valley beam splitter to electronic waveguide

摘要:The low energy electron dynamics in graphene is governed by the massless Dirac equation with an energy dispersion composed of two inequivalent conical structures, known as K and K’ valleys. Apart from this relativistic nature, an interesting aspect about graphene is the intimate relation between its electronic and mechanical properties. Mechanical deformations introduce strain in graphene, the main effect of which can be incorporated in the Dirac description as a pseudo-magnetic field that exhibits opposites signs in the two valleys. The existence of pseudo-magnetic fields suggests that graphene deformations might be designed for various electronic applications. In this talk, I will focus on two potential applications based on folded graphene structures: (1) Spatial separation of electrons from the two valleys, a property known as valley polarization/filtering- a prerequisite for valleytronic applications, where the valley index is employed to carry binary information. (2) Creation of confinement and waveguide for electrons, where the motion of electrons is restricted across the fold, while remaining as free propagation in the longitudinal direction. These findings demonstrate that graphene deformations have great potential as versatile building blocks for electronic devices.
